About Symbol Lists

Symbol lists makes it easy for you when working with multiple symbols. By using the symbol list feature, you can quickly add multiple symbols that have been saved together and add it to a RadarScreen page, or you can create a News filter. In TradeStation, there are two main categories of symbol lists offered - built-in symbol lists and custom symbol lists.

Custom Symbol Lists

Custom Symbol Lists are excellent organizational tools as they enable you to create and save your own lists of symbols so you can easily work with multiple symbols. For example, you can add multiple symbols into a RadarScreen page or create a News filter for multiple symbols. You might want to create Custom Symbol Lists for different types of symbols. For example, you might create a Custom Symbol List called "My stocks" and include all of the stocks you follow. Or, if you're in a Hot Lists window, you may want to add a symbol that is on the move to an existing Custom Symbol List. These lists can be created manually from the Manage Custom Symbol Lists dialog or you can automatically create a custom list from the Scanner window. They may be used as an input to a scan that provides the ability to "chain" multiple scans, or have the results from one scan used as the universe for a second scan. These lists may also be inserted directly into RadarScreen. Once created, you have the flexibility to append the custom list and consolidate custom lists together.

Whatever symbols you decide to group together in the Custom Symbol List, the result is that you will be able to access that group of symbols more easily. Custom Symbol Lists can be customized so once you've created the list, you can add or remove symbols from the list quickly and easily to meet your trading preferences.

Custom Symbol Lists are maintained locally on your computer, therefore they are available to you at all times and you can modify them. Others, such as the TradeStation Symbol Lists, are maintained by the TradeStation Network and therefore are not available when you are working offline and you cannot modify them.

Historical Symbol Lists

The custom symbol list functionality has been enhanced with the ability to create and manage historical custom symbol lists. A historical custom symbol list is simply a custom symbol list containing different symbol lists created at different dates and times.

Historical Custom Symbol Lists provide you with the ability to create a symbol list with historical components. For example, you may want to maintain a historical list of the Dow Jones Industrial Average components. With Historical Custom Symbols lists, this is now possible.

Whatever symbols you decide to group together, the result is that you will be able to access that group of symbols more easily. Custom & Historical Custom Symbol Lists can be customized so once you've created the list, you can add or remove symbols from the list quickly and easily to meet your trading preferences.

TradeStation Symbol Lists

The TradeStation Symbol Lists have been expanded to include over 100 Index Component Lists. You can now insert all of the components of a particular index, such as the 30 stocks making up the Dow Jones Industrial Average or the 100 stocks making up the NASDAQ 100 Index. You can find these new lists in the Add Symbol List dialog in RadarScreen under 'TradeStation Symbol Lists and then 'Index Components'.

The TradeStation Symbol Lists are maintained on the TradeStation Network, therefore you may not modify them and they are not available when you are working offline.

The Indexes, Index Components, Industry Groups, and Largest Volume Stocks categories under TradeStation Symbol Lists include a number of standard lists that are periodically updated. The TradeStation Network maintains the categories and the symbols within them. This ensures that the lists are up-to-date, without requiring you to download an update. In addition, new lists and categories can be added as they become available, again without the requiring a download.

  • Index Components - Index Components includes symbol lists from a variety of sources including exchanges and industry groups. For example, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Avg lists contain all of the symbols assigned to those lists by the index manager.
  • Indexes - Indexes provides lists of the major United States indexes. Be aware that this category refers specifically to index symbols and not to the underlying assets that make up the indexes.
  • Industry Groups - The Industry Groups  provides lists that offers  breakdowns of different market sector categories, such as Aerospace or Healthcare. Under Aerospace, you might find subcategories such as Aircraft and Parts & Equipment. Currently, Market Guide is the sole provider of the sector categories.
  • Largest Volume Stocks - Largest Volume Stocks includes lists of symbols that have reached the largest trading volumes over a period of 5 days. In addition to an overall list, each category includes lists for individual exchanges.
