Symbol Lookup - Stocks
The Stocks tab searches and finds the desired stock symbol based on the criteria you select.
Access using the menu bar Insert > Symbol menu sequence and click Lookup. You can also use the Main toolbar and click the Symbol Lookup icon.
The following methods are available to search for stock symbols:
- Description - Searches for symbol descriptions that contain the letter(s) that you entered as search criteria. For example, if you enter IB, search will return all symbols whose company names contain IB, (LBY for Libbey, Inc.). In addition to using the description search, the results will find all symbols related to the stock symbol you are searching. For example, typing "Microsoft" will have multiple symbols. This method is helpful if you know the company name but unsure of the stock symbol.
- Symbol - Searches by the actual symbol. This setting searches for symbols that begin with the letter(s) that you enter as search criteria. For example, if you enter IB, the results all symbols beginning with IB, (i.e. IBM, IBKC), but not LIBB.
The following filter settings are used to refine the search criteria:
- Country - Searches for stock symbols associated by country (United States, Germany, or All Countries). For example KO (Coca Cola) contains different list of symbols for United States vs. Germany. By default, United States is the selected Country.
- Include symbols no longer trading - Check this setting to display stock symbols for the selected symbol or description that is no longer trading in the search list. Symbols contain only historical data. This may include mergers that trade under a new symbol, and will be displayed with one or more exclamation marks ( ! ) after the root symbol.
Lookup - Displays the results you are looking for. The results will be based on what you entered in the Description, Root, Currency, and Country settings. Results will be displayed in the stocks symbol box.
Symbol/Description/Exchange/Country
Displays the results based on the criteria you selected. You can sort the list by clicking the desired a column name. An up/down arrow indicates if the column is sorted by ascending/descending (A-Z, Z-A) order.
- Optional. Select the desired column to sort by.
- Select the desired symbol from the list.
Lookup Options for [stock symbol] - Launches the Options tab displaying a list of options symbols for the selected stock symbol you are searching for. This allows you to see a list of options available for your selection. For example, Microsoft (underlying symbol MSFT), contains options to trade. However, Microsoft's underlying symbol MISO does not.
Click OK to insert the symbol into your active window, or click Cancel to exit without changes.
